چکیده

The class Lk of k-leaf powers consists of graphs G = (V,E) that have a k-leaf root, that is, a tree T with leaf set V , where xy ∈ E, if and only if the T -distance between x and y is at most k. Structure and linear time recognition algorithms have been found for 2-, 3-, 4-, and, to some extent, 5-leaf powers, and it is known that the union of all k-leaf powers, that is, the graph class L = ⋃∞ k=2 Lk, forms a proper subclass of strongly chordal graphs. Despite from that, no essential progress has been made lately. In this paper, we use the new notion of clique arrangements to suggest that leaf powers are a natural special case of strongly chordal graphs. The clique arrangement A(G) of a chordal graph G is a directed graph that represents the intersections between maximal cliques of G by nodes and the mutual inclusion of these vertex subsets by arcs. Recently, strongly chordal graphs have been characterized as the graphs that have a clique arrangement without bad k-cycles for k ≥ 3. We show that the clique arrangement of every graph of L is free of bad 2-cycles. The question whether this characterizes the class L exactly remains open. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 Graph Theory

Simplicial Powers of Graphs

In a graph, a vertex is simplicial if its neighborhood is a clique. For an integer k ≥ 1, a graph G = (VG, EG) is the k-simplicial power of a graph H = (VH , EH) (H a root graph of G) if VG is the set of all simplicial vertices of H , and for all distinct vertices x and y in VG, xy ∈ EG if and only if the distance inH between x and y is atmost k. This concept generalizes k-leaf powers introduce...

Graph classes with and without powers of bounded clique-width

Clique-width is a graph parameter with many algorithmic applications. For a positive integer k, the k-th power of a graph G is the graph with the same vertex set as G, in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if they are at distance at most k in G. Many graph algorithmic problems can be expressed in terms of graph powers. We initiate the study of graph classes of power-bounded cl...

A forbidden induced subgraph characterization of distance-hereditary 5-leaf powers

AgraphG is a k-leaf power if there is a tree T such that the vertices ofG are the leaves of T and two vertices are adjacent in G if and only if their distance in T is at most k. In this situation T is called a k-leaf root of G. Motivated by the search for underlying phylogenetic trees, the notion of a k-leaf power was introduced and studied by Nishimura, Ragde and Thilikos and subsequently in v...

Leaf Powers and Their Properties: Using the Trees

A graph G on n vertices is a k-leaf power (G ∈ Gk) if it is isomorphic to a graph that can be “generated” from a tree T that has n leaves, by taking the leaves to represent vertices of G, and making two vertices adjacent if and only if they are at distance at most k in T . We address two questions in this paper: (1) As k increases, do we always have Gk ⊆ Gk+1 ? Answering an open question of And...

Vertex Decomposable Simplicial Complexes Associated to Path Graphs

Introduction Vertex decomposability of a simplicial complex is a combinatorial topological concept which is related to the algebraic properties of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the simplicial complex. This notion was first defined by Provan and Billera in 1980 for k-decomposable pure complexes which is known as vertex decomposable when . Later Bjorner and Wachs extended this concept to non-pure ...
